·         OLD BUSINESS
o   It was brought up last spring to form a committee to address the National Ski Association to somehow look into the matter of making a long enough leash and/or some type of brake for snowboards, who do take off their boards on the hill
o   Noah Pearson lead a discussion on runaway boards and leashes.  Items discussed included leashes not always being used properly, runaways boards caused by laying boards down on snow bottom down when not in use or being used to slide on like sleds, “use of devices to prevent runaway equipment” does not necessarily mean use of a leash as the binding serves that purpose, whether all rental boards should have leashes, logistics of equipping and checking all rental boards for leashes, and clarification of Summit policy on requirement for leashes.
o   Steve White will investigate Summit policy on leash requirements.
·         NEW BUSINESS
o   Near Miss Reports would like to be used again.  Steve White will revise and produce.
o   Salt should not be used as an ice melt around the plazas or on concrete.  It is corrosive to concrete and the salt water will damage the plaza heating devices.  Sand is the preferred method of increasing traction in slippery areas
o   Patrol
§  Low snowpack makes it difficult to get into bump stations at Central.  Jason Miner will work with Jim Georgeson on ladders for low snowpack conditions
o   Accounting
§  Unstable desk will be addressed by Leon Wroblewski
o   Rentals
§  West Rentals need a radio to be able to contact Patrol for first aid care and Security when needed.  If anyone has a spare they can let them use until they can purchase one please contact West Rentals.
§  Inside stairs in West Rental has smooth metal flashing on steps.  Flashing is very slippery.  Noah Person will talk with Justin Howard about fixing with non-slip adhesive or replacing with traction tread.
o   Snowsports
§  Snowsports West building stairs slippery, especially during freezing rain.  Snowsports would like a re-design.  Spray melt needs to be investigated as use until permanent fix is achieved.
§  Lower stairs at Snowsports West building is missing handrails and is angled from being damaged by some sort of vehicle.  Greg Nelson will talk with Dane Larsen about building handrails and repairing.
§  Illnesses – if you’re sick, please stay at home and not pass it around at work.
§  Outside lighting on Snowsports West building is inconsistent with the existing fixture and lacking in the front.  Greg Nelson will make the electricians aware.
§  Snowsports West building has a roof leak that staff would like to repair but are concerned about asbestos possible being present.  Greg Nelson will check with Justin Howard about that.
§  There is a low hanging wire between Snowsports West building and Patrol that is felt should be raised.  Steve White will check into that.

Thank you for taking part in Safety Meetings, Recap and Review of Summit Safety Committee Goals and Organization

~Rob Gibson

Review Minutes from the last meetings, covering old business and topics covered

  OLD BUSINESS

  • Usual opening remarks with general thoughts towards a safety mindset, embracing the underlying principal and intent:  Personal safety for crews, visitors, and public.  How Boyne Basics can and should apply.

Review Manager and Supervisor responsibilities regarding documentation of meetings.

  • Tools, check in and out processes, employee responsibility towards tools and PPE.

  • Personal and vehicle First aid kits, restocking through Gib, Bram or Mark, and specific requests
  • Follow up from Jim on WSDOT Stop and Yields signs for Alpental Road

  • Reminder about OTJ incident reporting requirements and value of close call review process.

CURRENT and NEW BUSINESS                        *SAFETY IS #1 GOAL FOR EMPLOYEES*

  • Fire Pump truck training sessions continue, Kirby will lead a session tomorrow morning at 0600. Anyone still needing instruction or review should attend or schedule another time.  Truck still based at Central Shop

  • Gates reminder – access points to restricted areas are workers responsibility to re-secure.

  • Building Maintenance department is working on a large deck repair project Alpental Lodge, please use caution in work zones and watch for warning signs or restrictions.  Generates general discussion about work zone hazard communication, general and more specifically, and how best to succeed at incident prevention. BM Crew will review regularly, we see occasional practice of public ignoring signs and self-touring our facilities.

  • Weed control Spraying Operations are underway, crew advises that they produce a map of target areas and that employees should use extra caution in spray zones.  Do not eat berries and be aware of pets and public.

  • Jim G. advises we are doing pretty well on general cleanup but if everyone embraces practice of picking up rubbish work zones will be cleaner and thus safer.  Following discussion highlights some of the more common types of incidents seen generally in Washington and also specifically here at summit.

  • Housekeeping is a known contributor to workplace safety.  Slips, trips, and falls; ladders, electrical, and damaged or mis-used tools. An open claim involves lifting, another common workplace injury. Good discussion.  Crew Safety meeting techniques discussed.  Building maint shared that they rotate through crew members leading discussions to involve everyone in leadership. Lift maint also utilizes specific hazard identification  and ways to minimize risk.  Other departments look to most experienced employees to share lessons learned. A good technique is buddy system, safety check each other when using task-specific PPE

  • It is shared that there have been some break-ins and thefts recently, also gas siphoning.  Fill trucks at beginning of work week, consider not filling before weekend.  Keep eyes open, some have been daylight thefts.

  • Hydration  is discussed, hot weather is upon us.  Crew water jugs available at Central shop.

  • Grounds maintenance crew is working on parking lots, driveways, and access areas, if you see trucks hauling please yield right-of-way, and make sure operators see you prior to approach.

  • Current IFPL is discussed and how it affects our work. All of Summit follows 659N (currently level 1)

  • Fire extinguishers, watch dates and get appropriate to shop(s)

  • Future work: lift rescue and self-evac uation refreshers needed / PPE

  • Lock-out procedures, Jory will plan to address at next meeting

Remember, Help new employees with unfamiliar duties, mentorship increases workplace safety for all
